Chapter 13 - Odysseus Lands in Ithaca

Summary:

In this chapter Odysseus has just finished telling Alcinous his story, and he is ready to go home. So Alcinous helps him by packing a ship with many expensive gifts and food, and escorting Odysseus back home. The Phaeacians bring Odysseus to Phorcys, a cove in Ithaca, where he falls asleep and Athene covers him with a mist so that Poseidon does not see he is there when he wrecks the Phaeacians ship on the way back to Phaeacia. The mist was also to disguise him from Penelope, Telemachus, the Suitors, and everyone of Ithaca. Then Athene disguised as a shepherd girl met with Odysseus and he asked her where he was since he did not recognize Ithaca. When Odysseus heard that he was home in Ithaca, he began lying to Athene and telling her that he had never been here, but he did tell her the story of his adventure. After his tale Athene revealed herself to Odysseus and scolded him for lying to a goddess. Finally Athene told Odysseus of the Suitors waiting for him at his house and of Telemachus. Then the two planned on how to solve these problems and Athene set out to find Telemachus while Odysseus, disguised as an old man so no one will recognize him, set on a path to his palace.
